Hello, Kanshitsu.

Urushi is a sap — the blessing given from the life of trees.
So, The form should not be a human or an animal figure, but the Urushi figure.
It's almost like a fairy.

It is a technique that sculptor Tadahiko Emura has deepened Kanshitsu.
If we touch them, it is warm slightly.
The reason why the Urushi is the "Resident of Forest".

Kanshitsu is the creative technique of 1300 years ago.
Inviting these Kanshitsu sculptures to your home, they will survive until the next 1000 years.
The more you touch their surface, the deeper the texture will be.

They will be growing up with us.
As if we met a friend on a trip, the dialogue deepens from an artwork.

Kanshitsu(乾漆) is a Buddhist sculpting technique that has been used in Japan since the Tenpyo period (8th century). Kanshitsu is a traditional technique where the artist mixes Urushi Lacquer with clay (polishing powder) and sticks the mixture onto hemp cloth to shape the statue.

How to Make

In the Kanshitsu technique, the sculptor mixes Urushi (Japanese Lacquer) with clay (polishing powder) and sticks the mixture onto hemp cloth to shape.
This is, so to speak, “Papier-Mache" by Urushi lacquer.
Basically, it is the same as how to make the Buddhist statues in the Nara period.
Urushi is solidified in a humid environment (temperature: approx. 15-25℃/ humidity: approx. 75%).
Once solidified, they become resistant to acid, alkali, heat or water, and continue to stay for more than 3,000 years.
However, it is weak to UV light as same as us.
Urushi is obtained from scratching the Urushi Tree, but only a few drops can be collected at one time.
The artworks made by each drop just like a "tear crystal of Urushi".
The drops comes out for protecting the scratched wound.
We spared and received them from Urushi Tree.

It is just a "gift" from Urushi.

Here, you can meet the unique Urushi sculptures, which are different from lacquerware.
I hope the dialogue between you and Urushi will deepen.
